I was hesitant to do this post. However, other people who have posted on their blogs about fluorouracil really helped me get through this procedure.
Fluorouracil is used to treat small skin cancers and eliminate most pre cancerous cells. Since I have light skin and blue eyes, I am particularly at risk of skin cancer. When you add in my love of the outdoors and hatred for sunscreen, well there will be problems.
I am now in day 12 of applying the Fluorouracil ointment to my skin. Hopefully, in 2 more days, the doctor will tell me that I can quit. Then, I have about 12 weeks before my skin recovers. For many people, their symptoms worsen after the treatment is stopped. I actually have a very hard time believing that.
My skin is red, blistered, tightly stretched and very painful. My nose, forehead and cheeks are swollen. I feel that my cheeks may push out past my nose. Now, bits of skin are falling off after I wash my face, leaving little spots of blood. I also got a small amount of ointment on my lip and it is blistered up. Sleep is very difficult.
It is hard to go out in public, but one has to work and go to the store. It is hard to eat. My mouth won’t open very wide due to the tight skin. Also, the medecine gives you light flu like systems.
Still, I don’t won’t to die of skin cancer. I am actually very lucky. It looks like most people have worse reactions to the medecince than me. There is hope at the end of the rainbow. Supposedly your skin will look 10 years younger after you are fully healed.
